Why the small footprint wins inside

A 51 inch oval needs a clear run of floor most rooms do not have once you account for getting in and out. A 29.5 inch circle fits in a corner, a shower room, or beside a utility sink.

That is the single biggest practical advantage indoors, and it is why the round tubs beat the roomier ovals here despite being less comfortable.

The weight nobody calculates

Empty weight is what listings advertise and it is the wrong number indoors.

85 gallons of water is roughly 700 pounds. Add a person and you are past 850, concentrated on a circle about two and a half feet across.

On a ground floor concrete slab that is a non-issue. On a suspended timber floor, particularly upstairs or in an older building, it is worth a look at the joist direction and span before you fill it. Basements and garages are the easy answer.

Emptying is the indoor problem

Outdoors you tip it or let it run onto grass. Indoors you cannot.

There is no drain fitting on this tub, so you need a submersible pump or a siphon into a shower drain or a floor drain. Budget for one, because bailing 85 gallons by jug is a job you will only do once before buying a pump.

Insulation matters more indoors than out

Counterintuitively, a heated house is a worse environment for cold water than a cool garden. Room temperature sits around 68 to 72 degrees, so an uninsulated tub is fighting a 20 degree gap constantly.

Insulated walls and a lid are what make an indoor tub practical on ice rather than a chiller.

Condensation

The indoor version of the small footprint argument, with one advantage the soft tubs do not have.

Rigid beats fabric indoors

A soft sided tub is fabric holding water. Even a good one gets damp on the outside from condensation, and fabric wicks.

A resin shell does not. You get condensation on the surface, which you wipe, rather than a damp base sitting against a floor for months. Indoors, over years, that is a meaningful difference.

The smallest footprint for real volume

29 by 29 inches for 100 gallons is the best ratio here. It achieves it with height: 40 inches tall rather than wide.

That also gets water over your shoulders while seated on the internal bench, which the 29 inch round soft tubs cannot manage. So the small footprint does not cost you immersion depth, which is unusual.

The load question, seriously

This is the one to think about before buying.

100 gallons is roughly 830 pounds. Add a person and you are near 1,000, over a footprint of about 5.8 square feet. That is a higher point load than a large aquarium and comparable to a full bathtub concentrated into half the area.

Ground floor slab, basement or garage: no concern. Suspended timber floor: check the joists and their direction, or put it somewhere else. This is not a reason to avoid the tub, it is a reason to site it deliberately.

Getting it into the room

47 pounds is manageable, but a rigid 40 inch shell does not fold, compress or turn corners. Measure your doorways and any turns in a hallway before ordering. A soft tub goes anywhere in a bag; this does not.

Indoors, a tub usually ends up near a wall, a radiator or a piece of furniture. Whether the walls hold their shape stops being a comfort question and becomes a fit question.

Why rigidity matters in a room

A conventional inflatable bulges outward when filled. Outdoors that is invisible. Indoors, against a wall or a cabinet, it means the tub occupies more space than its stated diameter and presses on whatever is beside it.

Drop stitch construction, the same approach used in stiff inflatable paddle boards, keeps the walls vertical. What you measure is what it occupies.

It also means you can grip the rim to lower yourself in without the wall folding, which on a hard indoor floor is a safety point rather than a comfort one.

Roominess without floor length

Emptying, which nobody plans for

  2. A siphon if the drain is lower than the tub. Free and slow.
  3. Bailing. You will do this once.

Factor a pump into the budget from the start. It is the difference between draining being a five minute background task and a chore that makes you stop.

Choosing the room

Good: garage, basement, utility room, tiled bathroom, anywhere with a floor drain and ventilation.

Workable: a spare room on a ground floor with a hard floor and a nearby drain.
