If you only remember one thing about buying a chiller, make it this: match the chiller to the tub, not to your ambition.
Why 1/3 HP is the sensible default
The most common home cold plunge tub holds 80 to 110 gallons. A 1/3 HP unit rated around 79 gallons sits right at that size. Buy bigger and you pay for cooling power you will not use. Buy smaller and the unit runs constantly and still loses to a warm afternoon.
The built in pump matters more than the horsepower
This is the part buyers underestimate. A chiller needs water moving through it. Units that do not include a pump require you to buy one, match its flow rate, find somewhere to put it, and run a second power lead.
Having the pump and filter inside one housing removes three decisions and one failure point. For a first chiller that is worth more than a small difference in cooling capacity.
Power
600 watts is an ordinary appliance load. It will run from a normal outdoor socket without an electrician. That is not true of every chiller on this page, and it is worth checking before you buy something bigger.
Where the ratings get optimistic
Every chiller capacity rating assumes reasonable conditions: a covered tub, some insulation, and air temperature that is not extreme. Put the same unit on a bare PVC tub in direct sun and it will fall short of its number.
If your tub is uninsulated and uncovered, either fix that first or size up. The cheapest cooling upgrade available is a lid.
What it does not do
There is no ozone or UV sanitising here. Water care is still on you, which means a chemical sanitiser and a schedule. The filter catches debris, not bacteria.

There is a size cliff in cold plunge chillers. Below about 100 gallons, 1/3 HP units are plentiful and cheap. Above it, your options narrow fast and get expensive.
This unit sits right at that step.
When you actually need 1/2 HP
You need it when your tub is large, and tubs get large for one reason: height. Anyone over six feet needs a long tub, and long tubs hold 130 to 220 gallons.
At that volume a 1/3 HP chiller rated for 79 gallons is not slightly undersized, it is the wrong machine. It will run continuously, never reach your set point on a warm day, and wear itself out doing it.
Power is the real constraint
1200 watts is not a huge load in isolation, but it is a sustained one, and outdoor circuits are often already carrying lights, a pump, or a shed.
Work out what else is on the breaker before you buy. A chiller that trips the circuit at 2am is a bad discovery, and rewiring costs more than the difference between chiller sizes.
Do not over buy
The flip side matters too. If your tub is a standard 85 gallon inflatable, this is the wrong end of the range. You would pay more upfront, pull more power continuously, and gain nothing, because the limiting factor is your tub’s insulation rather than the chiller’s capacity.
Size the chiller to the tub you own. Not to the tub you might buy.
What you still have to do yourself
No ozone, no UV. The filter handles debris. Bacteria are your problem, which means a sanitiser and a routine. Budget for that alongside the chiller rather than discovering it in week three.

Cold plunging did not invent the water chiller. Hydroponic growers have been cooling reservoirs for decades, and Active Aqua has been making the hardware that does it for most of that time.
Why that history is worth something
Most cold plunge chillers on the market are recent, from brands with a short history and a few dozen reviews. This is a long running product in a different industry that happens to do the same job.
That means the failure modes are known, parts exist, and the reliability picture is built on years of use rather than one busy season.
The 40 gallon reality
This is a small chiller. Rated for 40 gallons, it suits a vertical single person tub or a small setup. It is not going to hold a 100 gallon tub at temperature in summer, and buying it for one is the most common way people are disappointed by it.
Match it to a small tub and it is excellent. Match it to a big one and you will blame the chiller for a sizing mistake.
The pump problem
There is no pump in the box. You need to buy one, and you need its flow rate to suit the chiller. Too little flow and the unit ices up or short cycles. Too much and the water does not spend long enough in the heat exchanger.
This is the single most common setup error with separates. If that sounds like more project than you want, buy an all in one unit instead.
A note on the power figure
The listing states 1000 watts, which does not sit comfortably with a 1/10 HP rating. One of those numbers is wrong and we could not determine which from the published information.
Before you plan any wiring, read the rating plate on the actual unit rather than trusting the listing.

Most chiller buying advice tells you to match capacity to tub volume. This unit is for the people who want to ignore that advice deliberately.
Two different jobs
A chiller does two things, and they are not the same job.
Holding temperature on a covered, insulated tub is easy. Almost any correctly sized unit does it, because you are only replacing the small amount of heat leaking in.
Pulling down a warm fill from tap temperature to the low 50s is hard work, and it is entirely a function of horsepower against volume.
If your setup runs continuously, only the first job matters and a small chiller is fine. If you fill on demand, the second job is the whole experience, and that is where 1.5 HP earns its money.
The honest case against it
Be clear about which person you are, because most people are the first one.
If you cover the tub and leave the chiller running, this unit spends its life doing a job a 1/3 HP could have done, while drawing more power and costing three times as much. Rapid cooling is not a feature you benefit from unless you actually start from warm.
Practical notes

Cooling water is the easy part. Keeping it clean is the part that makes people quietly stop using their cold plunge.
The chore nobody warns you about
A tub with a basic filter still needs draining and refilling, and the interval is shorter than you expect once bodies are getting in it. That is 100 to 200 gallons down the drain and a tub out of action while it refills and re-chills.
Ozone attacks that problem directly. It oxidises contaminants continuously, so the water stays usable much longer between full changes.
What ozone does not do
It does not eliminate water care. You will still test, still dose occasionally, and still change the water eventually. It lengthens the interval, which is worth real money in time and water, but it is not a set and forget system.
The cell is a consumable
This is the drawback that matters and it is rarely mentioned upfront. Ozone generator cells degrade with use. When one stops producing, the machine is a chiller with a filter, and your water care goes back to manual until you replace it.
Find out the cell cost and interval before you buy. If the seller cannot tell you, treat that as information.
Weight and permanence

How we compared these chillers
We started with the chillers people are actually buying for cold plunge use, including hydroponics units that have been adopted for the job, then cut anything that did not publish a gallon rating.
That cut alone removed several listings. A chiller without a stated capacity is unsellable advice, because capacity is the only spec that determines whether it will work for you.
What survived was compared on four things:
- Gallon rating against real tub sizes. Not against each other.
- Power draw. A unit that trips your circuit is not a bargain.
- Whether a pump and filter are included. Separates are cheaper on paper and more expensive in practice once you buy and match a pump.
- Water care. Whether the machine does anything about cleanliness or leaves it entirely to you.
Where a listing’s numbers contradicted themselves, we said so in the review rather than picking whichever figure looked better.
Sizing: the only section that really matters
Nearly every unhappy chiller owner made a sizing mistake, not a brand mistake.
Step one: know your tub’s real volume
Not the marketing number, the volume you actually fill. Most people do not fill a tub to the brim.
Step two: match the rating, then discount it

Then apply a reality discount. Manufacturer ratings assume a covered, insulated tub in reasonable air temperature. If your tub is a bare PVC inflatable sitting in the sun, the effective capacity is meaningfully lower than the label.
Step three: fix the tub before you upsize the chiller
This is the advice that saves the most money. A lid and some insulation will do more for your water temperature than a step up in chiller size, and cost a small fraction as much.
If you are choosing between a bigger chiller and an insulated cover, buy the cover.
Holding cold versus getting cold
These are different jobs and they need different amounts of machine.
Holding a covered tub at temperature is easy. Almost any correctly sized unit manages it, because it is only replacing slow heat leak.
Pulling a warm fill down to the low 50s is hard, and it is where horsepower shows. If you keep the chiller running continuously, you almost never do the hard job, so you can buy small. If you fill on demand and want to plunge the same day, you need more machine.
Decide which of those you are before you look at prices.
Power and placement
Check the circuit before you buy anything over about 1000 watts. Compressors draw a surge on startup that is well above their running load, and that surge is what trips breakers.
The unit also needs shelter from direct rain, airflow around it, and somewhere the noise will not annoy you or a neighbour at 6am. Compressors are not quiet, and this is the complaint that turns up most often in owner reports.
Water care
Most chillers filter debris and nothing else. That means you are dosing a sanitiser and keeping to a schedule, or you are draining and refilling often.
Ozone and UV units lengthen the interval between water changes considerably. They do not remove the job, and ozone cells are consumable parts with a replacement cost that rarely appears in the sales copy.
Our final recommendation
For most people with a standard home tub, the 1/3 HP all in one is the right answer, and the money you save over a larger unit is better spent on an insulated cover.
Go to 1/2 HP if your tub is over 100 gallons, which it will be if you are tall enough to need a long tub.
Only buy 1 HP or more if you either have a genuinely large tub or you fill on demand and refuse to wait. And only buy an ozone unit once you have discovered for yourself that the refill cycle is the part you hate.

Questions people ask before they buy
What size chiller do I need?
Match the chiller's gallon rating to your tub's actual volume, then assume the rating is optimistic if your tub is uninsulated or uncovered. For a standard 80 to 100 gallon tub, 1/3 HP is right. Over 100 gallons you want 1/2 HP or more.
Can I use an aquarium or hydroponics chiller for a cold plunge?
Yes, and one of our picks is exactly that. The machine does not know what the water is for. What matters is the gallon rating, whether it can reach the temperature you want, and whether the fittings suit your tub.
Do I need a separate pump?
Some chillers include one and some do not. If yours does not, you have to buy a pump and match its flow rate to the chiller. Too little flow and the unit ices up. Too much and the water passes through too fast to cool.
How long does a chiller take to cool a tub?
